For over 25 years we have been traveling to Japan each October to hand select quality koi for sale to our customers. This period has given us the opportunity to develop a close relationship with a number of koi breeders and also lean a great deal about how to select quality koi. During our October trip we try to carefully select between 300 and 500 quality koi that will retail from $200 to several thousand dollars in an effort to provide a great selection of quality koi to fit everyone’s budget.

Guaranteed healthy koi

We take our responsibility to provide healthy koi to our customers very seriously. Most koi dealers quarantine their new koi for 30 days or less. Sacramento Koi has a strict 4 month quarantine policy on all our koi coming in from Japan during our October buying trip. The main reason for this is to rule out any chance of spreading the “Koi Herpes Virus” (KHV) to our customers. A big problem with KHV is that it is temperature sensitive. That means that it can remain dormant and undetectable indefinitely in water below 62 degrees Fahrenheit. It is only when the water reaches 65 degrees Fahrenheit or higher that the virus becomes active. At that point it will typically kill most, if not all, the koi in a pond and there is no effective treatment to stop it at that point. 

For that reason we follow the advice of UC Davis veterinary hospital and keep all our koi heated to a minimum of 65 degrees throughout our whole quarantine process. 

This extended quarantine period also gives us the opportunity to thoroughly treat the koi for any parasites they might be carrying. Finally, near the end of this extended 4 month quarantine process we take samples of all the koi and have the samples PCR tested for KHV. This extensive quarantine process guarantees that all our koi are healthy and free of both disease and parasites when they are ready for release.

We offer a “preorder program” that is extremely popular amongst our customers. With this program you can go to our website and view all the koi we have sold in the past year. If you see one that interests you, you can order “a koi like this”. You can select the size and price range you would be willing to pay. Each koi order requires a $100.00 deposit. While we are shopping in Japan we will do all we can to try and find a koi that matches the koi you are looking for in the price range you selected. There in no obligation on your part to purchase the koi we found for you and if you choose not to purchase the koi your deposit will be fully refunded. All this preorder does is give you the first opportunity to purchase that koi. Every year nearly half of the koi we purchase in Japan are sold through this preorder arrangement. Once you purchase any koi from Sacramento Koi you become part of our family and you qualify for free technical support in the event you have a health issue with your koi. Simply call us and explain what you are experiencing and we will try and walk you through what you might check to possibly isolate what is going on in your pond. We are not a licensed veterinarian but we are willing to share what we have learned about how to take care of these beautiful creatures over the last 23 years
